When we started the trek home at 2:30 AM on Tuesday morning, one of the things that popped into
my head was this: How can we go about condensing this entire experience into a webpage that would
serve as a nice retrospective for those who attended the event, yet at the same time inform and entertain
those of you who didn't make it in so you can enjoy the memories along with us?
Not a simple task, by any means, especially due to the fact that there's going to be a LOT of
webboard discussion & other pages that talk about this event, and certainly some that go into
greater detail than we do here. After I thought about it for a while, I figured we'd just tell
it like a story, taking everything that we can possibly remember from our 2 days in Red Bank in
order, as well as throwing in some thoughts on the flicks (especially
Flies &
Better Place). Of
course, we'll need lots of photos, ALL of which were provided by the fine folks whose names you
see at the top of the page. By the way, if we forgot anyone or you'd like a photo that we
used removed, please let us know!
So, without further delay, here's News Askew's VulgarThon '98 Wrap-Up. Finally. We hope you enjoy it.
-Brad & Chris
As our website reported, we left Harrisburg for Red Bank around 10:00 AM on Sunday, and the
trip was fairly uneventful. After all, we've been to town enough times that the turns (few that
they are) become almost second nature. Upon arrival, we head right into town to hit the Stash
and pick up some swag. Downtown is surprisingly quiet, and, although the
Stash is buzzing a
bit more than in the past, it's pretty simple to get around and browse. We pick up some copies
of "Two Screenplays" and the Chasing Amy Austrailian poster (Hey, it's limited) from
Bryan Johnson
(who tells us the place has been moderately busy, but nothing too crazy).
By this time it's around 2:30 in the afternoon, which we feel is a good time to get to the
Courtyard Marriott (easily found RIGHT off the Garden State Parkway) and check into the room,
possibly scouting around to find some other VulgarThon folks. The hotel's a real nice place,
and the $50 a night charge for the room seems almost too good to be true! We spend the rest
of the afternoon watching some tube (Ya know, I FINALLY see why
Xena gets such good ratings),
driving around the area, and searching the hotel for other fans.
Some stroke of luck! After grabbing some dinner and heading back to our room, we ran into
Vincent,
Neil, Ben,
Ming, and some of the other riders...We decide to meet up with everyone in
the current "party room" (at the end of our hall) and drink a little, chat a little, etc...
As the night continues on, more VA fans find each other, and a small, mostly civilized
gathering occurs outside in the Courtyard area of the hotel. A banner reading "I Assure You,
We're Open" that's a dead ringer for that famous one Dante stuck outside of the Quick Stop
hangs from one of the room's balconies. We're happy to meet a lot of nice board folks and fans,
(many of whom know us from our website), drink a few beers, and talk movies for a couple of
hours. It's a great time, and the temperature stays respectably warm until around midnight or
so.
We wake at 7:00 AM (ugh), in the hopes up getting to town just before 8:00 (When the doors
of the municipal building, soon to likely be the VA offices) open. A short line outside the
building already exists, which is soon moved to the BACK of the building (contrary from what
our confirmation tickets had instructed). The t-shirt pick up process starts promptly at 8 and
is handled in a quick, orderly fashion. We have our shirts in about 5 minutes. There's time for
another stop at the Stash, so we drop in to see what special merchandise might be available.
Sure enough, on the counter is a $50 lithograph (limited to 100 copies) of Jay & Silent Bob,
containing 2 pictures, one of which Jay is licking Bob's ear (while Bob has a shocked look on
his face) with the "J" in Jay crossed out and changed to a "G". Funny stuff. They're signed
by both Kevin & Jay, and probably selling pretty fast. The crowds prove tough to deal with
inside the place, so we high tail it outta there and head back to the hotel for some breakfast.
One thing that's cool when you get a View Askew film festival together...Lots of great people
around to chat with about movies. Everywhere you turned there was a fan (usually a GROUP of
fans), and breakfast was no exception. We chatted with some nice folks (a couple of guys you
see in the picture on your left with Kevin outside the Stash) while we chowed down on the buffet. By
the way, the Courtyard Marriott puts out a hell of a spread! Perfect. Just what the doctor
ordered (since we had to load up...No food again until 6:30 at least!).
The line outside of the theatre, by around 10:30 AM (Doors were scheduled to open at 11:30)
had already grown about 1/4 mile long (much to Kev's pleasure, we're sure...he mentioned that
one of his most memorable moments was driving by and seeing the line outside the Sony). We
decided it'd be best to jump in line. Luckily, it's an unseasonably warm day for January, so
the wait goes quickly and comfortably. In a few instances, Jay walks by (to cheers from the
crowd), and we also run into Vincent and Co. who are kind enough to promise us a spot in
Theater 2 (Where
"Drawing Flies" and
"A Better Place" show FIRST, instead of at the end of
the night).
Starting around 11:30, the line moves quickly and all the excited fans start pouring into
the Red Bank Sony. When we get to the doors, we notice the Vulgar Eats boxes and drop our
canned goods in. The boxes look moderately empty for the number of folks that have gone into
the theatre so far, but there IS stuff in there, at least. We just got a note from
Susan Finelli, who organized the drive, telling us that the total
was around 100 cans or so. Not bad! Thanks to everyone who contributed. It was a very nice
gesture. Susan will be dropping all the food off at Lunch Break in Red Bank this Monday.
Theater 2 is definitely smaller and cozier, and we're very happy to be there. We grab the
ideal seats for film watching (in our opinion), dead center row, dead middle. Perfect. It's
definitely going to be better to watch the 2 new flicks before the Jersey trilogy, that way if
fatigue sets in we may just cut out before Amy begins...Hell, we've seen it TONS of times now.
In the meantime, as Theatre 1 fills up, we chill out with Vincent and the gang and help them
point folks in the right direction. Many others also try to get into Theatre 2 permaturely, most are
turned away.
Kevin walks down the side aisle of the theatre to thunderous applause. He
welcomes the crowd to the thon and, without much delay, mentiones that he "Likes to bring some
friends whereever he goes" and brings down this incredible line-up:
Brian O'Halloran,
Jay Mewes,
Vincent Pereira,
Matt Gissing,
Malcolm Ingram,
Ethan Supplee,
Bob Hawk,
Carmen Lee, and
Jason Lee! It's a very impressive
sight, and more than we'd ever hoped for. It was going to be cool to meet all these great
people. Kevin said a few more brief words, and, since we had a tight schedule and a TON of
flicks to watch, led all the guests out of the theatre.
Drawing Flies! This is the first we've ever seen the flick, and all we really knew about
it was that Jason Lee starred in it, and that it was about a group of kids that go in search
of Bigfoot. Strange and interesting little piece though. Also in the flick are
Carmen Lee
(Jason's wife and Vulgarthon guest),
Renée Humphrey (Trish "The Dish" from
"Mallrats"),and
Jay Mewes,
in his first non-Jay film character. The film was made after Mallrats and before Amy.
We're not going to give away any plot particulars or even a summary, because, well, we think
you should see it for yourself sometime. The movie is filmed entirely in black and white and,
while it's certainly not the best flick we've ever seen, any View Askew fan should watch it.
Great performances from all parties involved really helped the movie a lot. Hopefully, those
of you who haven't seen it will get a chance at some point, however, the directors don't seem
to have much hope (or desire) of ever finding distribution.
DRAWING FLIES: THE Q&A
Matt Gissing and
Malcolm Ingram, the co-directors of the film, hit the main stage along
with Jason and
Carmen Lee. Lots of questions are asked about the film's distribution and location.
Filming took place mostly at a park in Vancouver, although it gave an appearance of being
deep in the wilderness. Most of the casting came together when the guys met
Kevin on the set
of "Mallrats" (The film was actually made in 1996, between Rats & Amy). The guys are soft-spoken
and generally cool and laid back about the flick. They express their happiness about having
the opportunity to get the film made, but don't seem to have much interest in pursuing futher
distribution, even on cassette. Hopefully that will change so more of you can see the flick.
To close the Q&A, Jason gets asked a question about how the
"Enemy of the State" filming
is going. He gives a serious answer, which for some reason elicts chuckles from the audience.
The guy's just naturally funny, no matter what he says! He responds with, "What's so funny?",
which gets the crowd going even more. By this time, it was time for a quick break before the
flick we were REALLY waiting to see began:
"A Better Place".
On my way out of the (extrememly small) men's bathroom, I had my only run-in with
Jason Lee
during the day...I was washing up when he walked in. I didn't think this would be the best
time to strike up any sort of conversation, so I just calmly said, "Hi Jason", he said "Hey" (or
something to that effect) and that was it. When you run into someone in the can, it's best to
just leave it at that, I'd say. On my way out of the restroom, I couldn't help but chuckle to myself as I realized I just
walked by the guy who "immortalized" the stink palm gag, though...
When VulgarThon was first announced, it wasn't the guests, the Q&A, or even the Jersey Trilogy
on the big screen that got us excited. It was the chance to finally see
Vincent Pereira's film,
"A Better Place",
that had us looking forward to the event. And, believe us, this film does not disappoint.
Sure, we thought knowing Vincent and chatting with him in the past would bias us somewhat when
we watched the film but, trust us, this film blew us away. It is a GREAT film, and by all means
an AMAZING achievement in the fact that it's Vincent's first effort (written, directed and
edited by him as well). You know when a director pulls a
Rodriguez and handles the editing
chores himself that you're seeing EXACTLY what was planned for you to see. And it shows.
We're not going to give much of the plot away (Vinnie would KILL us!), but the story centers
around an unusual friendship between two high school teens,
Ryan [Eion Bailey] (a strong, self-chosen outcast)
and Barret [Robert DiPatri] , a new kid in town/school who instantly becomes a target for the school bullies.
The script is very good, and the performances that Vincent was able to get out of his actors
gave the movie a very realistic look and feel. And the guy knows how to edit a scene and move
or angle the camera to keep you involved in a scene. While the film's basically a drama, there
are a few violent moments that are quite shocking (and sometimes graphic), which add to the
film's intensity. We can't say enough about this film, and hope to see it again soon!
After "A Better Place" let out, we noticed
Kevin right outside the theater's doors, signing
stuff and chatting with some fans. Seizing the opportunity, we got in line to say hello and
give him a late Christmas gift...By the way, Kevin always recognizes us and asks about the site
whenever we chat, which always makes my day. Nice to know that he's reading the site! Our gift
is a limited copy of the Chasing Amy soundtrack that we'd been working on for the past couple
of months (4 copies were made for myself, Chris,
Vincent and
Kev, and that's all we plan on
creating), and he seems pretty pleased about it. He tells us he's got something for us as
well, which he'll pick up at the office later. Cool. The line's getting larger around the
man (naturally), and we hate to tie things up, so we ask if we can catch him later to sign
a couple things and stuff...He's happy to oblige.
A BETTER PLACE: THE Q&A
This was definitely another one of the highlights of the day. Not only does the audience
have a LOT of great questions, but Vincent handles the crowd well: A real natural! Particulars
such as casting, ad libbing (Which Vincent allowed to happen quite frequently in the movie,
we discover), special effects, and the general process of moviemaking are discussed.
Brian Lynch and
Carmen Lee joined Vincent for the session, but it was mostly his show.
Vinnie reveals that quite a few scenes of the film were shot on locations where they didn't
exactly have permission to do so, but we notice a familiar site right from the start: The
interior and exterior of Vincent's own home, which was used quite a bit (We remember the
place from our "Big Helium Dog" set visit last summer. Read about it!).
As we said, the Q&A was spectacular, and we're sure you'll see some of it on the VulgarThon
wrap-up video. We know that Vincent likes to keep a tight lip about his film, so talking in
more detail about the topics during the session may give too much away, so we'll leave it at
that.
Early on during the
"Clerks" showing, we heard a voice interrupt from the back of the theater.
This, of course, grabbing everyone's attention. It was
Kevin, who said something to the effect
of, "Since you guys have all seen this before...
Jason Lee has to leave and he just wanted to
say goodbye." We then noticed
Jason standing next to Kev, and the audience broke into a HUGE
round of applause and cheering, right there in the middle of the flick! Jason was smiling from
ear to ear, and waved to us all. It was sad to see him go, since we never really had the chance
to introduce ourselves (apparently he was quite mobbed all day, and we didn't want to play rabid
fanboys). For a moment, we thought about trying to get up and catch him before he took off (Some
of the audience members seemed to do just that), but decided it would be best to just let the
guy go in peace. It was great of him to come all the way in for the 'Thon, and a real pleasure
having him around, even if it was just for half the day.
CLERKS: THE Q&A
Brian O'Halloran and
Kevin Smith hit the stage for their first Q&A with our theatre for
the day. We discover that Brian's
been doing live theater work mostly, and, in addition to
"Vulgar", will soon be appearing in a film with
Ally Sheedy. For those curious parties, yes,
Kevin did talk to
Jeff Anderson and seems to be smoothing things out just fine.
Jeff may not
want to return to the world of film, but apparently anything that went wrong between he and
Kevin has, more or less, been put in the past.
Now, THIS is where the bomb gets dropped: Kevin
says that, although the critics may come down hard on them, "...the film after
"Dogma" will be a Clerks Sequel". Applause breaks out amongst
the crowd after a moment of shock and confusion. So many questions! So little time.
Kevin
asks us to keep the news to ourselves, but it of course leaks out little by little. Still no
REAL confirmation from Kevin
himself as to whether this is fact or just a joke.
Before we leave for dinner, we're lucky enough to run into
Ethan &
Brian in the lobby.
They're both really nice guys who stop and chat with us for a few minutes even though their
stomachs must be growling as bad as ours.
Brian treats us to some inside info about possible
"Clerks 2" plotlines, which we won't reveal here, and says he hopes
Jeff Anderson will return.
Wouldn't really be the same without him!
Brian's happy to sign Chris's
"Clerks" Laserdisc for
him. Cool.
Dinner break was a welcome arrival! The schedule was running a little late at this point
because of the unexpected Clerks Q&A, but we were happy to have had a chance to hear some of
Kevin's thoughts on a flick besides Amy for a change, plus it was nice to see
Brian up there
on stage fielding some questions as well. We decide that most of the joints right in town are
gonna be swamped, so we make the trek to the car and drive out to the local Burger King to try
some of these ultra-super special new-and-improved french fries. Hey, if Mr. Potato Head says
they're good, who's to argue? Wait a minute! Mr. Potato Head advertising for fries? That
cannibal! We eat quickly and head back to the Sony to make sure we're not missing anything
good. Looks like a lot of folks did the same or skipped dinner all together...They're hard
core! Soon, we settle back into our seats and prepare for
"Mallrats" to start. It'll be great
to see it on the big screen for the second time!
MALLRATS: THE Q&A
Hey, what can we say. It's "Mallrats". You think you know what went on during filming?
You have NO idea. Did you know that it's
Jay's favorite film of the trilogy (because he got the most screen
time, of course)? Were you aware that a certain actor (who did the entire film with his
arms crossed...watch it, you'll see) spent every scene stoned? How about the enthusiasm that
Kevin and the crew had about the film before it's release?
We were treated to the famous "monkey story" an anecdote that we'd heard during the
"Chasing Amy" Q&A at Rutgers (Read the summary
here!). Also, we begin having some problems with the PA
system. Kevin gets
frustrated and starts doing his best to raise his voice loud enough for us
to hear, without a microphone. Jay
slips out during this, and soon returns triumphantly with
a megaphone blaring some horrible attention-getting sound, eliciting laughter and cheers from
the crowd. Kevin
continues for a while using the megaphone. It's a classic moment.
Next, we heard a LONG, drawn out tale of the plans
for Mallrats 2: "Die Hard in a Mall". Bluntman & Chronic were going to make a huge, drawn
out appearance in a Batman-esque sequence where Brodie sent the "Blunt signal" in to the sky
after he and T.S.'s significant others got abducted and taken to the mall. After
Kevin ripped
Jay from a roomful of beautiful females hanging all over him (much to Jay's displeasure), they
were going to suit up as B&C, just to head out the front door and next door to Brodie's
apartment. Eventually, the tables were going to be turned when the guys got kidnapped and
the girls had to come to their rescue. Alright, it's funnier when you hear it in person.
Kevin
added a disclaimer to the effect of how ridiculous the whole thing was (and periodically said
"The Fucking BLUNT SIGNAL?!?!" throughout the remainder of the
"Mallrats" Q&A.
The studio and Kevin
himself thought for sure they had a winner on their hands with Rats. They
eagerly awaited its release...And, well, you know the rest. Needless to say, all hopes for a
sequel went right out the window, which (thankfully) led to the next
View Askew project:
"Chasing Amy". Everything happens for a reason.
We hung around the lobby for "Chasing Amy's"
entire running, chatting with some of the other
VA staff and fans who'd just seen enough of the inside of a theatre for one day. It's a nice
break, and the time flies by. We'd just watched the
Amy Disc with the running commentary 2
nights before, so we don't feel bad about missing the flick on the big screen. That would
have been the 4th or 5th time, anyway.
Chasing Amy: The Q&A
Once again, PA problems at the beginning due to the cursed Theatre 2's sound system.
Kevin and
Scott Mosier ran the Q&A for this one. By this time, it's about 12:30 at night and
the guys look really tired. Like a trooper, though,
Kevin starts taking questions, and continues
answering for a good 45 minutes or so...
The FIRST question pops up is about a soundtrack for the film, which is greeted
by shouts of "SUMMARIES!!", the first we'd heard all day, surprisingly. We can't hear very well
from the back of the theatre, but Kevin
mentions that we'd just given him a soundtrack and gives our site a plug. That was nice to hear.
Here's a new one on us...It turns out that "Chasing Amy"
was originally conceptualized as a PG-13 "Clueless"-like
movie, except with a lesbian. Boy, are we glad they changed THAT. I mean, sure
Clueless has it's amusing moments, but come on.
A neat little exchange occurs between Kevin and
Bob Hawk (who's standing on the sidelines), about
what makes a "great movie". Bob
calls "Chasing Amy" a "very good movie" and
"Pulp Fiction" a
"great movie". Obviously, this sparks some great discussion and comebacks from
Kevin and
Scott,
but it's all in good fun. This leads the Q&A in a different direction that we've seen in the
past, with Kevin discussing
some other directors and his opinions on what's said about him in the press.
Finally, a hilarious incident during the Q&A involved a question about the
Entertainment Weekly blurb which linked Kevin to
Guin Turner, and suggested that the
"Chasing Amy" "boy meets
lesbian" story was lifted from this relationship. The second this question was asked, without
missing a beat, Kevin passed the microphone to
Scott! Apparently,
SCOTT was the guilty party
involved in this little fiasco. He modestly claimed smugly that nothing came out of his attempts
and got the mic back to Kevin, fairly quickly, we might add. Another classic moment.
Kevin's said that the
"Chasing Amy" Q&A in theater 2 was his favorite, while the
"Mallrats" Q&A in
theater 1 was another good one. It was a solid way to put an end to the festival.
We decide that it's around 1:30 AM and that it would probably be a good idea to play
annoying fanboys and finally get Kev
to scribble his name on a few things...He signs my Australian Amy poster (with lines pointing to the cast saying, "All ardent readers of News Askew"), my
script book, and Chris's Clerks and Amy laserdisc covers. We thank him for a great night, and
he tells us that Kim's got some stuff for us (that he mentioned earlier), and not to leave
without getting it from her. Cool! We wonder what it is.
Kim proves pretty simple to find, and she presents us with 2 special T-Shirts...They were
sent out exclusively to VA friends and staff, and now we had some as well. We feel very
special. They've got the picture of Jay licking Bob on the front (that we mentioned earlier,
since it appeared on the limited lithograph), with the caption "Gay And Silent Bob". The back
reads, "View Askew Productions: We're here, we're gay, get used to it." Definitely a collector's
item!
Kim talks to us for a few minutes and tells us how much that she appreciates the News Askew
website, since it saves Kevin so much time. She says that she often reads it over his shoulder
and finds it very enjoyable, and that Kevin has us bookmarked in his favorites. It's hearing
stuff like that that makes all of this worthwhile! What a great way to end the day...
Remember, just because you weren't there doesn't mean you missed EVERYTHING! All day long,
a special VulgarThon cassette was being prepared.
Brian Lynch was interviewing everyone in
sight all day long, asking a variety of questions ranging from serious to just plain silly.
Behind the scenes footage with the guests and crew was also taken, and every single Q&A was
filmed from start to finish in EACH theatre. You'll even see the t-shirt line in the morning
and the line outside of the Sony. We'll keep our eyes on the project, and try to let you know
as soon as the tapes are available! We estimate around a $19.95 - $24.95 pricetag, but don't
quote us on that.
Well, that about does it for our VulgarThon wrap-up! The stuff you just read is probably
about 10 percent of our experiences during the day...I mean, we HAD to get this thing online
SOMETIME, right? We hope you found it worth the wait, and enjoyed reading it.
