Yeah, they really do take jumps. This one takes a quantum leap from the rest of them. Not in terms of content, but visually. The last two, Chasing Amy and Dogma, were like Bob Hope movies but with satirical ideas. The movies play off the laughs. They're not message movies by any stretch of the imagination. We attack pop culture, the pervasiveness of "the Net" and entertainment culture. They go for the funny bone.
Richard Goldstein replies: Anyone who sees Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back can attest to its obsession with homosexuality. As for Chasing Amy, any film that features a woman whose lesbianism stems from a traumatic relationship with a guy—and who ends up with a guy—is not pro-gay. It's a straight man's dyke film.

Tomorrow, Jen and I start the long, cross-country trek back to the Jers, after being out in L.A. for a month and change shy of a year.
What a long, strange, and productive year it's been.
Short of that, I've got no real news to share.
Well, except the following tid-bits...
'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back' will be released on DVD and VHS on February 12th (yes - just in time for Valentine's Day).
Logistically speaking, I'm not sure who's going to be on the commentary track just yet. It may wind up being just me and Mewes, fittingly enough (and please - no string of "NO WAY, KEV! GET EVERYBODY BACK FOR THE COMMENTARY TRACK OR IT'LL SUCK!!!" posts; trust me - it'll be worth listening to if it's just me and the boy). We're also working on getting the old, circa '98 Mtv shorts for disc, so keep your fingers crossed.
On the 'Vulgarthon' front: it's looking like January. The only flicks I know for sure that'll be in the line-up are Bryan Johnson's 'Vulgar' (the theatrical release of which is now February) and 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back' (the theatrical release of which is... well, now; fuck, what're you reading this shit for? Go see the flick again).
Please - no strings of "KEV! YOU GOTTA INCLUDE ******* IN THE LINEUP!!!" or "KEV! YOU GOTTA GET ******** TO SHOW UP THIS YEAR!!!" posts. We'll be working on the official selection of flicks all next month; and, as most of you already know, we NEVER announce anyone being in attendance other than me - as most folks are usually working on other flicks whenever we throw one of these things, and I, traditionally, am not.
Should be fun, though, regardless. These things always are. Maybe there'll be a cut of the Columbia TriStar DVD done by that point, and we'll debut it there. Then we can have a Q&A after you've just watched me give a bunch of Q&A's on tape. And to make it even more weird, it'll all be in synch with the Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon'.
Right now, it's looking like a March start for rehearsals on the new flick, and an April and May shoot, if everything goes as planned.
And thus ends the bare-bones overview on View Askew 2002.
I'll check in from the road.

![]() Writer/Director George Lucas |
Question: What kind of movie experience does watching DVD represent to you?
Do you enjoy renting a DVD rather than going to a movie theatre?
George Lucas: I generally go to the movie theatres. I mean, I go to the movie theatres to see what's happening now and then I watch DVDs for older movies that are no longer in the theatres. So I don't really choose one or the other. If I want to see Dr. Strangelove, I can't go to the movie theatre. But if I want to see something more contemporary, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (laughs), I have to go to a movie theatre. |
![]() Producer Rick McCallum |
Question: You mentioned that making the DVD was like making a movie, another movie. Can you talk about how much it cost to put the DVD together? What kind of investment you guys have in it?
Rick McCallum: It cost (laughter), that's something, you know... does it matter? Question: I think it's interesting. Rick McCallum: Let's put it this way, it cost a lot, it took a lot of effort, a lot of timeŠ Question: How many Kevin Smith movies could you make? (laughter) Rick McCallum: Well, it depends. Based on his last one? (laughs) It cost a lot. |

Kevin Smith's new film will be shown on October 4.
Festival organiser Chris Fell says the screening was secured so late it had not been included in the official brochure.
Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Carrie Fisher and Chris Rock star in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.
It is not due out in the UK until December.
Other highlights at the festival include the UK premiere of Nicole Kidman's new film The Others.
The festival begins on September 27 with the Andie McDowell movie Crush and ends on October 12 with Ghost World, which stars Steve Buscemi.
Ananova is the Official Online News Service of the Leeds International Film Festival 2001.
On his Bluntman & Chronic graphic novel that he and Image Comics originally promised to be released by in conjunction with the release of his film Jay & Silent Strike Back, Smith told Newsarama the script is complete and artist Mike Oeming is currently close to completing the artwork.
Smith confirmed post-production work and promotion for the film caused the delays in finishing the script, and that he hears the GN is currently slated for a release at the end of this month. Image Publisher Jim Valentino has recently reported on the Image website message boards that as of yesterday, there was no specific date for Bluntman & Chronic and that October was the most specific time he's heard.
As to not having the project in stores during the release of the film, as originally promoted, when asked Smith said he didn't see it as a lost marketing opportunity...
"Not really," he replied. "The book will follow the movie into the stores, and that's always a good thing."
Asked about the new Brave and the Bold title, which he and his entire Green Arrow creative team will move to following issue #14 or #15 of the latter series, Smith said it's still early and he's "not quite sure yet” how the format of the new title will work out. He reiterated his comments from Chicago's Wizardworld that there will be "lots of Green Arrow“ and "lots of Batman", but that he's not sure yet and the series "might wind up being a team-up book of any characters in the DCU I feel like writing at the moment."
"That'd be fun," he said.
Finally, he said following the story arc 'Quiver', which wraps up in Green Arrow #10, readers can expect to see a few single-issue stories, and then the intro of a new villain in a story arc that will finish up his and his creative team's run on the series.

Oscar-winning duo MATT DAMON and BEN AFFLECK have always had a sense of humor about themselves and the Hollywood filmmaking machine. Now, thanks to longtime pal and cult director KEVIN SMITH, the pair gets to mock their Hollywood images in the amusing new film, 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.'
In 'Jay and Silent Bob,' Matt and Ben play themselves on the set of the fictional 'Good Will Hunting' sequel, 'Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season.' Their cameo appearance allows for plenty of biting satirical dialogue (scripted by Smith) in which the actors get to dig on each other's film flops, from 'Forces of Nature' and 'Phantoms' to 'All the Pretty Horses' and 'The Legend of Bagger Vance,' while still getting in a jab or two at Smith's expense. The hilarious, self-reflective scene even has a cameo from 'Hunting' director GUS VAN SANT!
The final chapter of Smith's New Jersey Chronicles (which debuted in 1994 with the cult comedy 'Clerks,' then followed with 'Mallrats,' 'Chasing Amy' and 1999's 'Dogma.'), 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back' finds the arguably beloved title characters on a cross-country chase from Jersey to California to save their "reputations" when a corporate studio wants to turn their comic book into a motion picture. The film also features cameos by Smith regulars JASON LEE and JOEY LAUREN ADAMS, plus GEORGE CARLIN, CARRIE FISHER, MARK HAMILL, SHANNEN DOHERTY, JON STEWART, JUDD NELSON, SEANN WILLIAM SCOTT, plus a few other surprise guests.
